Old Year's week and Ubersitz

25.12.2024 - 30.12.2024

The Old Year's week in the Haslital is an ancient custom of Celtic origin. It dates back to pre-Christian times, when the inhabitants of the mountain valleys used trychels to keep the evil spirits away from their villages during the longest nights of the year. This custom is still upheld today and passed on to the next generation. Every day, the Trychel processions become more powerful and the noise louder, culminating in the night of the «Ubersitz». On this evening, all the Trychler from the surrounding villages of Willigen, Hausen, Eisenbolgen, Unterbach, Hasliberg and Meiringen make their way to the village center of Meiringen for a joint Trychel parade. The Old Year's week starts on the night of December 25th to 26th and lasts until the last working day of the year, the «Ubersitz». During this annual tradition, restaurants and bars keep their doors open for you. Would you like to warm up with a warm mulled wine or satisfy your hunger with a delicious Chäsbrätel? Then Meiringen is the place for you. Because there is no shortage of food and drink stands either. The unique surroundings, the unforgettable atmosphere and the impressive sight fascinate young and old alike.
