This circular trail near Meiringen leads you to very special inhabitants in a forest with bizarre rocks - and into a floodplain and amphibian spawning area of national importance.

A 4-kilometre circular trail awaits you at Funtenensee lake with information boards telling you the secrets of the forest and floodplain inhabitants. The trail takes you through the enchanting Birglenwald forest up to the Schwindeln clearing. Then it's back downhill to the Aare and along the Hüsenbach stream through the Sytenwald floodplain.

Floodplains are fascinating areas of streams, rivers and ponds that are periodically flooded by water. During floods, a floodplain is inundated so that new gravelly areas are constantly being created and new habitats for pioneering plants and animals are constantly being created. The Funtenensee lake, the pools on the gravelly pioneer areas and the wet forest are important habitats for the protected amphibians and other animals that can be discovered here.
