A monstrous climb of maximum 106 percent
People seeking a thrill will find one here in the Haslital valley on the Bernese side of the Grimsel Pass. A monstrous climb of maximum 106 percent indisputably makes the Gelmerbahn the steepest open funicular railway in Europe.
The Gelmer funicular, with its 106 % gradient, is the steepest open funicular of Europe. It takes you up to the picturesque Lake Gelmer at 1850 m, from where you can undertake numerous hikes and mountaineering tours, or just enjoy the stunning alpine scenery.
You can reach the bottom station of the Gelmer funicular easily by car or by postbus (stop: Handegg, Gelmerbahn). The station is located just off the Grimsel pass road in Handegg.
