This circular tour on a gravel bike takes you from the impressive mountain and glacier landscape of the world-famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate to the crystal-clear Lake Brienz and back to Grindelwald.

The tour starts and ends in Grindelwald, at the foot of the mighty Eiger and its historic north face. On the three daily stages, you will travel from one picture-postcard motif to the next: picturesque hamlets and chalet-style villages, stunning mountain and glacier views, spectacular waterfalls and the crystal-clear Lake Brienz. Thanks to the large number of car-free side roads, field and forest paths, the region is predestined to be discovered by gravel bike. The route runs entirely on official, well-signposted bike and cycle paths, so together with the GPS data, navigation is child's play.

Description:

DAY 1 GRINDELWALD - MÜRREN

» Variant 1: Direct tour 30 km, 1200 metres altitude difference, 600 metres descent.

» Variant 2: Difficult tour 35 km, 2100 m difference in altitude, 1500 m difference in depth.

The direct tour varinate starts in Grindelwald on the Schweizmobil Veloroute 61 out of the valley along the Schwarze Lütschine to Zweilütschinen. Here we change to Alpine Route 1 to Lauterbrunnen. In Lauterbrunnen we start the second ascent on the marked bike trail 450 towards Mürren. From Mittelberg we leave the signposted bike route and ride on an asphalt path along the railway line directly to Mürren. The car-free, original panoramic mountain village at the foot of the Schilthorn offers a breathtaking view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

The difficult tour variant starts with a longer ascent of a good 1100 metres in altitude on an asphalted, car-free little road to Kleine Scheidegg, the hub to the Jungfraujoch. Here you can take a break to fill your carbohydrate stores. And of course, the impressive panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is just waiting to be admired. The signposted bike route no. 1 leads you via Wengen into the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland's base jump mecca. The descent is steep, solid riding technique and good brakes are essential. A short detour to the world-famous Staubbach Falls is worthwhile. In Lauterbrunnen we meet up with the direct tour variant see above.

DAY 2 MÜRREN - MEIRINGEN

» 60 km, 800 metres of altitude, 1800 metres of descent.

From Mürren you cycle again on the bikeroute 450 over small and partly steep asphalt and alpine paths via Gimmelwald to Stechelberg. Now you roll comfortably down the Lauterbrunnen valley, past the Trümmelbach Falls. After Lauterbrunnen you can choose to ride on the right side of the river on forest paths and easy trails, Alpine Bikeroute 1 (GPS track) or on the left side of the river on the road. Depending on the time of day, you can expect quite a lot of traffic here. From Zweilütschinen, Bikeweg 1 leads to the right of the Lütschine to Wilderswil and through Interlaken to the northern shore of Lake Brienz. From here, Bikeweg 451 leads over partly paved, partly unpaved paths in a constant up and down, always with a beautiful view of the deep blue Lake Brienz, to Brienz. In Brienz we change to the Aare cycle path No. 8. To the right of the Aare, the last kilometres of the day are a pleasant end to a long day of biking.

DAY 3 MEIRINGEN - GRINDELWALD

» 30 km, 1500 metres of altitude, 1050 metres of descent.

The last day of the round tour is also on Alpine Bike Route No. 1. Immediately after the first metres in altitude, the first attraction of the day is reached: the legendary Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes defeated his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty. Rosenlaui is reached after another 400 metres of altitude. The spectacular glacier gorge can be visited on foot, the tour takes about 45 minutes. After another 100 metres in altitude, the beautiful Chalet Schwarzwaldalp beckons with culinary delights. Now the tour continues to the highest point of the day, Grosse Scheidegg. From here, with the imposing Wetterhorn behind you, the rapid descent to Grindelwald begins.
